CREATIVE THERAPY

I am pleased to be able to use creative therapy within my practice, but what exactly do I mean by creative therapy, and how might it help you?

Creative therapy does not mean you have to be an artist. It can be, and often is, a very simple process. It’s useful if you feel stuck and need to unlock something that you can’t quite access. It’s also very helpful if you feel unable to talk about something that may be very traumatic.

In creative therapy work, I give you a piece of paper and some pens, and I guide you to draw or represent in some way on the paper the things you are struggling with. There is no judgement and absolutely no pressure, and the process has been really helpful to a number of clients and to me personally. It’s about allowing your unconscious mind to express what is holding you back, which you may not even be aware of on the surface.

For me, issues which I thought I had dealt with long ago, surfaced through the use of creative therapy and it was this process that finally allowed me to fully acknowledge, and then accept and let go, of destructive narratives and patterns from the past.

I can use the technique to uncover limiting beliefs (“I’m not good enough”, “I don’t deserve to have a voice”, “Why does this always happen to me?” are some examples of limiting beliefs). We can then talk about the drawing and not directly about the limiting belief. By doing this, I can dissociate you from the trauma as we are not talking directly about it, and this can make it easier for you to open up in a way that is safe and supported.

The technique can also be used in drama triangle work, and I will be publishing a blog in the coming weeks about the drama triangle and how this works.

Once we have established the issues that are holding you back, we can then start to reframe those beliefs or feelings and look at the criteria you would need for these new beliefs to be successfully installed.

Often the work will ease symptoms of stress and anxiety, and will stop clients feeling frustrated and instead, feel able to move forwards with their lives.

This work is done in the privacy and comfort of my therapy room based in Dereham, just outside of Norwich. My room is in a secluded, peaceful garden, enabling you to feel at ease and relaxed.
