limiting beliefs

“I’m a born worrier” and other limiting beliefs

Sitting in the waiting room at my local GP surgery last week, I was interested to hear another patient explaining to the man next to her, her limiting beliefs, “I’m just a born worrier. I worry if I don’t have anything to worry about”.

There were a few things I wanted to say, but it wouldn’t have been appropriate to interrupt someone else’s conversation. However, it did get me thinking about how many people might be carrying these kind of beliefs around with them, without stopping to examine whether they are true.

It is biologically impossible to be “a born worrier”. That’s a fact. Babies do not have the intellectual capacity or reasoning needed to formulate worries.

This is therefore a limiting belief, something that this lady has heard throughout her life and has now accepted as being her truth. The fact that she was complaining of a large number of physical ailments will not be a coincidence. When we are in a constant state of worry, our bodies come under enormous stress and we cannot then function as well as we should.

What limiting beliefs do you have? Here are some of the ones I hear a lot in my therapy room:

“I’m not a good mother”.

“I just won’t be able to do it”.

“I am not good enough”.

“I have failed.”

“I don’t deserve to be happy”.

“It’s too late to change now”.

“I’m pathetic and stupid”.

“I’m not able to voice my opinion”.

There are hundreds of these, but they can all be examined and challenged and then seen to be false.

We cannot rationally examine them when we are in a state of high anxiety, as the emotional part of the brain overrides the reasoning part in a fraction of a second and cuts off our ability to see clearly.

This is where I can help. By reducing the anxiety levels, I can then help you to examine these beliefs, challenge them, and reframe how you think about yourself.

From my private and peaceful therapy room in Dereham, near Norwich, I can help you free yourself from these limitations and live life more positively. Appointments are available in person or online.
